A character is only half of a good conversation. The other half is what you write to her. Chat prompts are the messages, scene openers and short out-of-character notes that steer an AI companion toward better replies. This guide collects practical templates for adults who want a stronger first scene, fewer repetitive answers and a character who remembers what matters.

Open with a scene

The first message you send sets the pattern for everything after it. Instead of a one-word hello, give the model a place, a time, a small action and a reason to respond. Short scene openers work better than long monologues because they leave room for the character to act.

  • "It's late at the hotel bar and you've just noticed me reading your name tag. What do you say first?"
  • "We've both arrived early for the gallery opening. You hand me a glass and ask what I think of the painting behind us."
  • "Rainy Sunday, your apartment, a film neither of us is watching. You pause it and turn to me."
  • "First date on the rooftop terrace. You're already seated and you've ordered for both of us. Explain why."
  • "You're back from a work trip and I pick you up at the airport. Tell me about the worst part of the flight."

Steer with short notes

Most platforms let you step outside the story with a bracketed note. Use it for direction, not dialogue. Keep notes short and specific so the model applies them without breaking the scene.

  • "(OOC: keep replies under 120 words and end with a question.)"
  • "(OOC: slow the pace; focus on dialogue and small gestures.)"
  • "(OOC: stay in first person, present tense.)"
  • "(OOC: she is more confident now; let her lead the next scene.)"
  • "(OOC: skip ahead to the next evening.)"

Fix repetitive replies

Repetition usually has a cause you can remove. If the character repeats the same phrase, regenerate once, then edit the reply to remove it, because models copy their own earlier answers. If every reply ends the same way, ask for variety in a note. If replies get shorter and flatter, your own messages may have become short; write one richer message to reset the rhythm.

  • "(OOC: avoid repeating earlier phrases; vary how sentences begin.)"
  • "(OOC: describe the setting once in this reply, then return to dialogue.)"
  • "Rewrite your last reply with more personality and one specific detail about your day."

Keep her memory straight

When the character forgets something important, restate it inside the story instead of arguing with the model. Then pin the fact if the platform supports pinned notes or memory entries.

  • "You remember I'm a chef, right? You teased me about burning the risotto last week."
  • "(OOC: remember: we met at the gallery, she lives in Lisbon, we've been dating for two months.)"
  • "(OOC: summarise our story so far in five short points.)" The answer makes a ready-made memory note.

Request images in chat

On character-first platforms that generate pictures inside the conversation, image requests follow the same rules as prompts on a generator: stable identity, one scene, one action and clear framing. Mention the setting and the camera rather than a long list of adjectives.

  • "Send me a waist-up selfie from the rooftop terrace at sunset, soft side light."
  • "Show me tonight's outfit in a full-length mirror shot, warm lamp light."
  • "A candid photo of you reading on the sofa, three-quarter angle, natural window light."

Keep the character's appearance in her profile so every image uses the same face and hair. For deeper image control, see our AI porn prompts guide.

Build tension gradually

Good roleplay builds tension gradually. Let each scene have a beginning, a turn and an end, and use time skips instead of forcing the story forward in one message. A pacing note helps: "(OOC: take this slowly; three or four exchanges before the scene changes.)" Keep everything between fictional adults and within the consent boundaries written into the character and the platform rules.
